Cahors, Clos La Coutale 2022
An excellent introduction to this once renowned region at the heart of the beautiful Lot Valley, the original home of Malbec (known locally as Cot), planted here on 60ha of terraced vineyards on the limestone hillsides. The inclusion of Merlot (up to 30% Merlot or Tannat is permitted) makes this a more approachable, modern style with some softer plum fruit alongside the darker, earthier Malbec. There's still some tannic structure however after ageing in oak foudres followed by ex-Bordeaux barrels, making this an excellent food wine (preferably magret de canard).
